WATCHING THE NIGHT - Rijksmuseum Competition 2020

In February I submitted six pillowcase patterns to the Rijksstudio Award 2020, a biennial art and design competition. The Rijksmuseum invites everyone to create using their vast collection of public domain images. For my entry Everybody Sleeps, I combined elements from over thirty-six different art works to create six new patterns. Each pillowcase is a reflection of the online search experience and how the disparate images interact to arrive at new visually poetic compositions and narratives through image associations.

WATCHING THE NIGHT  began with the muse, how, during sleep, are we guarded and protected. While you sleep, Rembrandt’s THE NIGHT WATCH protect the night. Dutch draftsman Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita’s OWL is awake. A vision of Krishna appears in the nocturnal darkness. The 17th century butterflies unify the vision and traverse to “Part of the Starry Sky.”
