In February I submitted six pillowcase patterns to the Rijksstudio Award 2020, a biennial art and design competition. The Rijksmuseum invites everyone to create using their vast collection of public domain images. For my entry Everybody Sleeps, I combined elements from over thirty-six different art works to create six new patterns. Each pillowcase is a reflection of the online search experience and how the disparate images interact to arrive at new visually poetic compositions and narratives through image associations.

COSMIC CAT AND THE ECLIPSE

Warren de la Rue’s “Waning Moon” and an early 19th century print cat finds themselves in the “Stars of Cygnus.” Another part of this dreamy night sky is the imaginary ca. 1870 Aspect Of An Eclipse of the Sun By the Earth, As It Would Appear from the Moon. The night sky is awake with stars, they hold us in our sleep.

SUN DOG AND THE WATCH COMPANION

A sun dog is a member of the family of halos. Here the 1672 graphic shining sun meets the 19th century waiting seated dog in the glorious night sky “Stars of Cygnus.”  Opposite, The Saint Bernard guards you in the night as he has done over many years. Wraps of roses send their fragrance and colors all around your dreams.
