LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BIRDS AND THE BEES

The “birds and the bees” is an English language metaphor referring to courtship and reproduction. Here, 17th, 18th, and 19th century Dutch butterflies, birds, tiny yellow bees, and blossoms by artists, naturalists, and explorers gather. This pattern invites the conversation of the “birds and bees” to expand into the 21st century to include flowers, plants, animals, and PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BIRDS AND THE BEES - Rijksmuseum Competition 2020

In February I submitted six pillowcase patterns to the Rijksstudio Award 2020, a biennial art and design competition. The Rijksmuseum invites everyone to create using their vast collection of public domain images. For my entry Everybody Sleeps, I combined elements from over thirty-six different art works to create six new patterns. Each pillowcase is a reflection of the online search experience and how the disparate images interact to arrive at new visually poetic compositions and narratives through image associations.
