GOOD MORNING AND GOOD NIGHT FROM GUANYIN, THE GODDESS OF LOVE AND COMPASSION

To fall asleep surrounded by the love and compassion of Guanyin allows one to dream one’s deepest dreams.  And then to wake up, the dreamer continues into the day, awake, also protected by this generous love.

In February I submitted six pillowcase patterns to the Rijksstudio Award 2020, a biennial art and design competition. The Rijksmuseum invites everyone to create using their vast collection of public domain images. For my entry Everybody Sleeps, I combined elements from over thirty-six different art works to create six new patterns. Each pillowcase is a reflection of the online search experience and how the disparate images interact to arrive at new visually poetic compositions and narratives through image associations. 

GOOD MORNING AND GOOD NIGHT references the 17th century Chinese print of a headstone image of the Buddhist goddess Guanyin from the RIJKSMUSEUM.
